While seated and looking ahead, the gauge cluster offers up valuable information to its driver. Just to the right of the custom-feeling steering wheel are the headlight, 2WD/4WD, and Sport mode switches. An ample upper storage spot gives you space for the cell phone or GPS, while a large glove box provides even more space for your must-have off-road essentials. Finally, a twin bottle holder is found in the center console for the extra water you want to carry along for the journey.

When it comes to carrying loads, you will have plenty of space in the rear cargo box to tackle most jobs. This box has an open upper section and semi-sealed lower section for items you wish to keep out of the mud or rain from the ride. This big box will tilt as well to dump out whatever it is you need to move from one spot on the property to the next. The Can-Am Commander is not only a great play machine but it can get many jobs done while working in rough terrain.

The engine in the Can-Am Commander has become one of the most reliable engine platforms with a deep throaty rumble and a sound that would make most Harley owners jealous. Pressing the go pedal reveals the awesome power of this machine and with a large 54mm throttle body being coaxed along by Can-Am’s iTC (Intelligent Throttle Control) system. Controlling the throttle via computer, the brain in the Commander can help control the off-on-off throttle action you may get while riding really rough terrain which causes your foot to bounce on the pedal.

The cherry on top of this Commander sundae is DPS. And with DPS comes the Visco-lok QE front differential. This system is totally transparent to the driver as there are no buttons to push or switches to flip in order to get the Visco-lok system working. This really helped in the tight slower sections that became really rutted and root filled.

With the driver sitting astride the central bodywork, the riding (or driving) position is very motorbike, too, complete with a set of handlebars for steering. A helmet isn’t required, either, which alot of people find attractive. However, as with most other three-wheelers in the UK, you can ride the Spyder with either a car or a motorcycle licence.

The original Can Am Spyder was very impressive five years ago and has kept ahead of the pack even with the adoption of high-level electronics on top-end motorcycles, the Spyder still is advanced. The Can Am Spyder is fitted with the same basic Bosch ESP chassis stability system you’ll find on many cars.

The new model for 2013 is a touring version with bulky bodywork and plenty of luggage. The panniers and top box are fully integrated, while the suspension is softer than that of the RS version. There are two transmission options, a motorcycle-type manual with foot change and hand clutch, and a semi-automatic which operates the clutch for you but demands you change up through the gears via a button on the handlebar.

Once the driver learns to ride it smoothly, the Can Am Spyder starts to become more fun, although the handling is decidedly odd. The initial steering action loads and compresses the suspension as much as causing a direction change, then as you enter the turn it becomes more direct. It’s not progressive or linear, either, so there’s a learning curve before you achieve smoothness and accuracy, while on bumpy surfaces it’s never really possible to hold a consistent line. However, mastering it is an interesting challenge and adds quite alot to the experience of the drive.

The Spyder is not especially fast by motorbike standards, the power-to-weight ratio being inferior to that of most bikes due to the 700lb kerb weight. Still, the 0-60mph time of 4.5sec isn’t sluggish and, combined with the wind blast, will prove exciting enough for anyone used to driving a car. Although the Spyder is as wide as a small car, drivers will also be a lot less bothered by the inability to overtake where a motorcycle can easily slip past traffic.

The top of the range model is equipped with lots of chrome, a high-end sound system, lots of additional instruments and an automatic gearbox. All of the bikes in the Cam Am Spyder range will turn heads – there’s nothing else quite like it on the roads.

So, imagine my delight when I was asked to ride pillion on a Can-Am Spyder as part of a new monthly Spyder ride out organised by Can-Am Spyder dealer 158 Performance based in Tallington, near Stamford.

The Spyder Riders meet monthly and take day trips out to places across the UK. So far locations have included Matlock in Derbyshire and popular seaside resort Hunstanton on the Norfolk coast, among others.

Although I’d seen them in the showroom and in brochures nothing prepared me for my first encounter with a Can-Am Spyder.

From the roar of the engine to its almost space age appearance, the Can-Am Spyder attracts curious onlookers of all ages wherever it travels.

During our Spyder ride we even had a couple wind down their window at traffic lights to ask what the Can-Am Spyder was. So, be prepared to pose for pictures, answer questions and talk to complete strangers if you are lucky enough to own a Can-Am Spyder.

Above all, if you get the chance to ride out on a Can-Am Spyder then take it. It’s an experience you’ll remember for a very long time to come.

You see the Can Am RS is a three-wheeled beauty like no other which oozes style, speed and fun, fun, fun so it’s no good being a shrinking violet astride one of these. One thing you can be sure of is that whatever colour choice and extras you go for the Can Am RS turns heads wherever you go.

To say that my first experience of riding pillion on a Can-Am RS was extreme is an understatement. On the return journey of a 90 minute ride out, which saw temperatures plummet and the heavens open with rain, sleet and snow, the Can Am RS held its own, even when operating at top speeds and in challenging conditions. As I’m sure you can imagine this was great comfort for a novice like me!

The Can Am RS not only looks good but it feels good too. The sound of its Rotax® 990 V-Twin engine combined with its almost space age looks quicken the pulse and bring a gleam to the eye, especially as you open it up on the road and let it perform in all its glory.

With a Can Am RS on your drive, in no time at all you’ll soon be making up all kinds of errands to run and people to see in order to get a proper Can AM RS fix on a regular basis.

Get bitten by the Can Am RS bug and staying in will become a thing of the past as you plan all kinds of road trips to show off your Can Am RS in all its glory. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend your free time.

That was until I got on the back of the beautiful Can-Am RT and fell in love.

The Can-Am RT’s certainly a head-turner, creating fans of all ages and from all backgrounds. Its muscular design combined with that beautiful growl of the engine when you turn the key is sure to get your pulse racing in anticipation.

So, there’s no point trying to blend into the background when you’re riding a Can-Am RT or its sister the Can-Am RS. These amazing beasts are meant to be seen and heard – attracting waves, thumbs up and other comments from curious, and I’m guessing, jealous, passers-by.

Built around a Surrounding Spar Technology frame the Can-Am RT features a slim and light frame which provides a low centre of gravity to enhance stability and make it pretty easy to handle.

For a biker novice like me it’s the answer to my prayers, along with the sumptuous gel seats which really make you feel like you have your very own armchair on top of its three wheels. This seat is what’s needed on a long journey or when tackling the bumpy roads if you want to avoid a rather numb posterior.

Apparently it’s not just multi-million-dollar sports cars that catch the star’s eye, but stunning Can-Am Spyders too.

The multi-millionaire celeb is no stranger to the tabloids but made headlines in UK papers again when he was snapped riding his Can-Am Spyder Roadster (RS) home from the US X Factor studios.
